80m catamaran

Catamaran model used for global strength analysis. Shell elements model the hull surface. The mesh for structures such as these is easily constructed in Strand7 by using the lofting tools.

The longitudinal stiffners and riders are modelled with beam elements. The lofting tools automatically align the axes of the longitudinal stiffeners so that they are perpendicular to the hull surface.

Static loading on the catamaran is modelled using a transient dynamic analysis. Constant equilibrated loads are applied, with sufficient damping to cause the vessel to come to rest quickly. As the transient solver requires a time step, the natural frequency solver is used to determine the period of vibration for relevant modes. The animation shows two modes of vibration. The first is a hogging mode, the second a pitch-connecting moment.
