Adjust Tools: Smooth Plates

Description

Adjusts the shape of selected plate elements to reduce in-plane distortion.

This tool moves plate nodes aiming to keep internal angles as close to optimal values as possible.

Coordinate System

The coordinate system (UCS) in which the node smoothing calculations are performed.

This affects operations such as averaging and projecting. For example, if averaging the position of two nodes in a Cartesian UCS, the average position is calculated by averaging the X, Y and Z coordinates directly. But if a cylindrical UCS is selected, the average position is calculated by averaging the polar coordinates using the following procedure:

  1. (X,Y,Z) coordinates of are transformed to (R,θ,Z);
  2. the average (R,θ,Z) coordinates are calculated;
  3. (R,θ,Z) coordinates are transformed back to (XYZ).

This approach can produce better results for meshes intended to capture surfaces and shapes that are circular or spherical, for example.

Smooth boundary nodes

If set, the positions of nodes along the outer boundary of selected plates may also be adjusted.

If not set, those positions are not changed by smoothing.
