Beam Attributes: Pipe Pressure
Description
Assigns pipe pressure to selected beam elements of type pipe.
Pipe pressure attributes apply constant pressure to the interior and/or exterior surfaces of pipe elements. The attribute is applicable only to pipe type beam elements.
Pipe pressure attributes are load case dependent.
Dialog
Internal
Internal pressure.
Positive internal pressure expands the pipe.
External
External pressure.
Positive external pressure compresses the pipe.
Include Axial Force
If set, both the internal and external pressure will produce an axial force in the pipe. The effect is similar to that of an end-capped pipe under the action of internal and external pressure.
Internal pressure produces a tensile force equivalent to the pressure times the area of a circle with diameter equal to the internal diameter pipe.
External pressure produces a compressive force equivalent to the pressure times the area of a circle with diameter equal to the external diameter pipe.
Two components of axial strain are produced by the internal and external pressure. The first is due to the abovementioned axial force, and the second is due to the Poisson's effect of the pressure acting on the pipe wall.
